  • Guidelines For Participatory Worship

    “But all things should be done decently and in order” (I Cor. ); “Let all things be done for building up” (I Cor. ). We desire that all participatory worship during our assembly meetings is done decently and in order and edifying to all present in the meetings. Our first and most important priority is worshiping (giving worth) to Christ by remembering His death through celebration of the Lord's Supper(Acts 20:7, I Cor. 11:20).

    We affirm that our all-wise God has revealed Himself and His will in a completed revelation -- the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments -- which is fully adequate in both content and clarity for "everything pertaining to life and godliness" including the ordering of the church and the family (2 Pet. 1:3-4; 1 Tim. 3:15).

    We deny that God's people should treat His Word as inadequate for church and family life by supplementing His completed revelation with humanistic psychology, corporate business models, and modern marketing techniques.

    Scriptural conduct is particularly important in our assembly meetings; our participatory worship should be well grounded in Scripture.

    Each man (I Cor 14:34) is the spokesperson for his family (I Cor 11:3).  The expectation is that every man will bring something from God’s Word (psalm, hymn, spiritual song, lesson, or Scripture) prepared from his walk with God and his family’s weekly walk with God (I Cor. 14:26).

    The possibilities can range from something as simple as reading a Scripture to as complex as skillful exposition and prayer. Below are some options to consider. Scripturally you might choose one or all of the above. Scriptural conduct and edification are crucial.

    •  Read a Scripture passage.
    •  Comment on the Scripture you have read.
    • Offering up a prayer.
    • Requesting a hymn after reading an appropriate Scripture (our hymnal has a Scripture listed just below the title)
    • A God exalting testimony of Him working in your lives, along with a Scripture (Eph 3:11-21)

    We welcome input and sharing of helpful knowledge of current events during our fellowship time or during the week via email or phone calls. Any thing that is needed to warn the assembly or deal with issues of this nature should be filtered through the elders (example of Paul in I Corinthians 5).  We ask that you avoid the following;

    • Praising or exalting individuals or organizations.
    • Complaining about individuals or organizations.
    • Discussion of issues that frustrate you or please you.
    • Comments on teaching that would bring glory to the messenger or take away from the message of God’s Word.

    In general we want to take to focus off of man, and place it on Christ and the Word of God.  As we are centered on our Lord and the Holy Scriptures, He will be glorified!
